TV Turnoff Organizer

Event Overview

National TV Turnoff Week is usually held on the third week of April each year.  There is a sponsoring organization encouraging participation the website is www.tvturnoff.org.

The organizer is responsible for all publicity, handouts, collecting the entries to select winners, and providing a list of the winners' names to Carol Halpern who will select books for each winner.  Organizer also submits the list of winners to Marilyn Clark to announce in the morning message. Lastly, the organizer prepares the Certificates of Achievement for each participating student and distributes them to the students' teachers, and distributes a follow up article that stimulates some reflection about the role of mass media and electronics in healthy daily life.  This event is funded by the PTA.  Carol will directly submit her expenses to be reimbursed. As we have gone electronic, copy paper expense is limited to the paper for the certificates as copying is done on the school photocopy machines.

Publicity:

Usually a short announcement in the pink in the two weeks prior to the event and a listing in the calendar section.

A pink announcement in the week of the event with information about the handouts and when and how to submit entries.

A pink announcement Monday following the end of the event reminding people to send in the entries by Wednesday.

Handouts: (PDFs)

  • On the Monday of the event, there are two electronic handouts
    • A "screen cover" that the children can write down what they will do instead of screen time
    • An explanation of how to participate
